History of Reckitt
Reckitt Benckiser Group plc, commonly known as Reckitt, is a British multinational consumer goods
company that was formed in 1999 through the merger of Reckitt & Colman plc and Benckiser N.V. The
company's origins date back to 1823 when Isaac Reckitt founded a starch mill in Hull, England. Over
the years, Reckitt expanded its product line to include household and personal care items.
Similarly, Benckiser, founded by Johann A. Benckiser in 1825 in Germany, initially focused on
industrial chemicals before transitioning to consumer goods. The merger created a global powerhouse
in the consumer health, hygiene, and home products sectors.
Post-merger, Reckitt Benckiser
focused on growing its market presence through strategic acquisitions and innovation. The company
acquired notable brands such as Lysol, Finish, and Air Wick, expanding its portfolio significantly.
In recent years, Reckitt has increasingly emphasized health and hygiene, acquiring companies like
Mead Johnson Nutrition in 2017 to enter the infant formula market and Biofreeze in 2021 to
strengthen its health offerings. Reckitt's dedication to sustainability and corporate responsibility
has also been a significant part of its strategy, reflecting its commitment to improving lives
through high-quality products.
