History of Milo
Milo is a popular chocolate malt beverage manufactured by Nestlé, and its history dates back to the
early 1930s. It was first developed by Australian inventor Thomas Mayne in 1934. Mayne was inspired
by the need to create a nutritious and energy-boosting drink for his son, who was often sick and
undernourished. Combining malt extract, milk powder, cocoa, sugar, and other essential nutrients,
Mayne created what would become Milo.
In 1934, Milo was introduced to the Australian
market, quickly gaining popularity due to its rich chocolate flavor and purported health benefits.
The beverage was marketed as a nutritious supplement for growing children, athletes, and individuals
needing an energy boost. Over the years, Milo expanded its reach globally, becoming a beloved
beverage in numerous countries, particularly in Asia and Africa. Nestlé acquired the rights to Milo
in 1985, further enhancing its global distribution and marketing efforts. Today, Milo is available
in various forms, including powder, ready-to-drink, and snack bars, and continues to be a staple in
many households worldwide, enjoyed both hot and cold as a refreshing and energizing beverage.
